A fab professional organizer—Amelia Meena, the founder of Appleshine Lifestyle Organization in NYC—once gave me this great advice that I often use: For every new thing you bring into your home, throw two things away.

Even if it’s two scraps of paper, it keeps you in the habit of getting rid of things that add clutter—but not much else—to your life.
